Baudrillard (Simulacra & Hyperreality), Foucault (The Panopticon), Dubord (Society of the Spectacle)

This week we are developing from the Historical & Stylistic approach to our 3rd critical viewpoint of PostModernism - The Theory & Philosophical

As Post-modernism can be seen as a reaction to Modernism in the Historical Approach, the Philosophies of Post-Modernism can be seen from a Theoretical Approach.

Our key Theories are of Baudrillard's ideas on Simulacra (Simulations - Artificial Representations of reality that no longer bare any resemblance to the original - ie Apple Tango, Madonna's Airbrushed Photoshoot or Our lives as they are constructed on Facebook)

Some films which deal with this theme are The Matrix & Blade Runner

This is caused by all-pervasive (constant exposure) to Media which Re-Present Reality. We now cannot seperate 'The Truth' from the artificial because our understyadning of the world, society, what is 'Truth" comes from wikipedia, TV, Facebook, Celebrities, Film narratives, 24 Hr news networks. We have lost touch with reality and live in a state of 'Hyper-reality'.

Again The Matrix, Scott Pilgrim all deal with these themes

Dubords' concept that we are 'the society of the spectacle' - society has been reduced to image and superficialism - style over substance. We are obsessed with our appearance and looking at other people - Big Brother, X-factor (not about originality or the art of musical songwriting - its about imitation, copying, image and performance how you can 'brand' and sell it), supersize vs superskinny, Big Fat Gypsy Wedding, Onloy way is Essex, Music Videos (not the music its the image we buy into!), Youtube, the mainstream acceptance of Pornography, that our iphone 'says' something about us... our visual lives charted on Facebook, Avatar as a good film because if its CGI...

This 'voyeurism' leads us neatly onto:

Foucaults concept of the The Panopticon - the perfect prison where the entire prison society is visible and under surveillance. A system designed to see everything. How does this approach apply to shows like Big Brother, Advertisers watching you on Facebook and targeting ads to you, The web looking at you online, more CCTV in UK than any other country - look how it was used in the London Riots. A voyeuristic society of images with no meaning and nothing to believe in? Your iphone allows governments and corporations to track you and collect every detail of your life.

Woah. Heavy.
